Now or Not at All

When journalist Mike Stanhope is accused by a truck builder of libel, he’s determined to vindicate himself. But as he investigates the company, he finds himself drawn into a much older mystery. What happened to the ancient building that once stood on the corner of the company’s factory site? Why was it air-brushed out of history, and what really went on there?

Soon he’s juggling his modern-day research with his efforts to solve a much more elusive puzzle, with far-reaching implications – and he’s being thwarted at every turn. When he stumbles on a body in a wood, but then it disappears, he’s convinced he must be on to something: but what?

Trish, the factory owner’s wry but enigmatic daughter, seems to be on his side, but he suspects some hidden agenda. Mike finds himself reluctantly drawn to her, but fears for his relationship with his absent girlfriend Sam, who is temporarily overseas.

More about the plot

What is the proper role of a journalist? Is it to report the news, however harmful to the people concerned, or to help to put wrongs right?

That’s Mike Stanhope’s challenge when he writes that a company called Warriners is about to go bust. The company denies it robustly, yet although Mike suspects he’s the victim of an elaborate deception, he starts to feel strangely defensive towards the business. The ambivalence of the CEO’s daughter adds to his confusion; she seems hostile to the company, yet he also detects an underlying loyalty to it.

As Mike picks his way along a precarious path to the truth, a much deeper mystery threatens to distract him, and he has to dig deep to juggle the conflicting elements of this complex tale.
